How Long Does It Take?
- Standard renewal: usually a few weeks.
- Peak seasons (spring and summer): allow extra time.
- Fast Track: passport arrives within about 1 week.
- Online Premium: same-day service with a passport office appointment.
When should you renew your passport?
The safest time to renew is before your passport becomes borderline for the trip you are planning. For many people that means checking before booking flights, hotels, visas, ESTA, ETIAS, or package holidays. A passport can still have time left on it but fail a destination rule, especially for Schengen trips where the 10-year issue-date rule also matters.
- Travelling to Schengen: check the issue date and make sure you have 3 months after leaving Schengen.
- Travelling outside Europe: check whether the country expects 6 months validity or another specific rule.
- Changing passport after booking: update airline, visa, ESTA, ETIAS, or travel provider details where needed.
Before you apply
Gather the details you need before starting the renewal. This reduces delays and avoids rejected photos or missing information.
- Your current or most recent passport.
- A digital passport photo that meets HM Passport Office rules.
- Any name-change documents if your name has changed.
- Travel dates, so you can decide whether a standard, Fast Track, or Premium service is needed.
