Cruise passport rules for UK passengers

Cruise lines often ask for more passport validity than the countries you visit, and if you don't meet their rule you can be refused at the terminal without a refund. We checked 13 cruise lines popular with British passengers on their own websites on 14 October 2026.

Play safe: for most cruises, have at least 6 months left on your passport after the cruise ends, and make sure it was issued less than 10 years before you sail if the ship visits Europe. Several lines need a passport even for UK-only cruises.
Our checker tests the rules of the countries you visit. For a cruise, also meet your cruise line's own rule below. Check your passport · EES and cruises

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a passport for a cruise around the UK?

Yes, for every major cruise line we checked, including P&O, Cunard, Ambassador, Princess and Saga, even if the ship only calls at UK ports. Some lines, such as Cunard and Saga, want at least 6 months left even on UK-only cruises.

Why do cruise lines need more passport validity than the countries I visit?

Cruise lines set their own boarding conditions, and many use a single 6-month rule for every passenger. The ship's arrival counts as entering each country (passenger details are sent ahead), and cruise lines are charged fines for passengers without proper documents.

Do I need to do EES fingerprints on a cruise?

Usually not if your cruise starts and ends at a UK port: GOV.UK says these sailings are usually exempt from EES for day trips. If you join or leave the ship in a Schengen country, you may need to register there.

Will I get a refund if I'm refused boarding because of my passport?

Usually not. Most cruise lines' terms say they won't refund you if you're refused for missing or invalid documents, and travel insurance usually excludes passport problems.

Cruise lines can change their rules; always check your booking documents and the line's website before you travel. Related: airline passport rules · denied boarding with a valid passport.
