Lost or Stolen UK Passports
If your UK passport is lost or stolen, it’s important to act quickly to protect yourself from identity fraud and to arrange a replacement.
Step 1 – Report it immediately:
- Report your lost/stolen passport online at: gov.uk/report-passport-lost-stolen
- This cancels your passport so nobody else can use it.
Step 2 – Apply for a replacement
You’ll need to apply for a replacement passport. This is treated as a new passport application, not a renewal.
- Apply online via gov.uk.
- You’ll need digital photos and to pay the standard passport fee (currently £88.50 online for an adult, £57.50 for a child).
- Paper applications cost slightly more (£100 for an adult).
If you are abroad
If you’re outside the UK and your passport is lost or stolen:
- Apply for an Emergency Travel Document (ETD) online at gov.uk/emergency-travel-document.
- The ETD allows you to travel to the UK, or in some cases, a few other countries depending on your journey.
- The fee is currently £100.
Tips to prevent problems
- Keep a photocopy or digital scan of your passport separately when travelling.
- Store your passport securely in hotels (safes) rather than carrying it at all times.
- Check your passport’s expiry date well before travelling so you have time to replace it if lost.
