Christmas market FAQs

When do Christmas markets in Europe open?

Most open in the second half of November and run until around 23 or 24 December. Some, such as Vienna, Prague, Budapest and the Italian markets, stay open until late December or early January. Check each market's dates above.

Which Christmas markets can I reach by Eurostar?

Lille and Brussels are a direct Eurostar ride from London. Bruges, Aachen, Cologne and Frankfurt are one change away via Brussels, and Strasbourg, Colmar and Stuttgart are one change away via Paris. Maastricht and Valkenburg are reachable by train with two changes.

Do I need 6 months on my passport for a Christmas market trip?

No. All the markets in this guide are in the Schengen area, so your passport must be less than 10 years old on the day you arrive and valid for at least 3 months after the day you leave.

Do I need ETIAS for a Christmas market trip this year?

No. ETIAS has not started and no start date has been confirmed.

Which currency do I need?

Most markets in this guide use the euro. Prague uses Czech koruna, Budapest Hungarian forint, Poland the złoty, Switzerland Swiss francs and Copenhagen Danish kroner. Cards are widely accepted, but some small stalls are cash only.

How we checked this guide

Opening dates come from each market's official website or the city's tourist board, checked on 9 October 2026. Where 2026 dates have not been announced, we show last year's dates and mark them "TBC". Travel times are approximate, and flight routes change between seasons, so check with airlines and Eurostar before you book. Passport rules come from GOV.UK foreign travel advice.
