Winter sun: passport rules for UK travellers

Winter sun destinations use very different passport rules. Short-haul favourites such as the Canary Islands and Madeira follow the Schengen rules, while many long-haul destinations need at least 6 months on your passport from the day you arrive β€” and some need a visa or travel authorisation before you fly.

When to go: Winter sun trips peak from October to March, with the biggest demand over Christmas, New Year and February half-term.

Check your passport before you book

Rules vary by destination. In Europe, the Schengen rules apply: your passport must be issued less than 10 years before you arrive and expire at least 3 months after you leave. Many long-haul destinations need at least 6 months from the day you arrive.

Schengen example (Canaries, Madeira, Malta): arriving 10 January 2027 and leaving 17 January 2027, your passport must be issued after 10 January 2017 and expire on or after 17 April 2027.
6-month example (Dubai, Thailand, Egypt): arriving 10 January 2027, your passport must expire on or after 10 July 2027.
