From the huge linked ski areas of the French Alps to car-free Swiss villages and good-value resorts in Andorra and Bulgaria, Europe has a ski holiday for every level. For each resort we've added what UK skiers need to know: when the season runs, the nearest airport and transfer time, whether you can go by train, and the passport rules. Season dates and facts come from each resort's official website.

Passport check: every resort in this guide is in the Schengen area (Andorra is reached through France or Spain). Your passport must be less than 10 years old on the day you arrive and valid for at least 3 months after you leave. You do not need ETIAS this winter.

Ski holiday FAQs

Do I need 6 months on my passport for a ski holiday in Europe?

No. All the resorts in this guide are in the Schengen area or, for Andorra, reached through France or Spain. Your passport must be less than 10 years old on the day you arrive and valid for at least 3 months after the day you leave the Schengen area.

Which ski resorts can I reach by train from the UK?

Several French resorts are reachable by Eurostar to Paris or Lille and then a train to stations such as Moûtiers or Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Some Swiss resorts, including Zermatt, Verbier and Wengen, can also be reached by train via Paris. Look for the "By train" tag and check routes before you book.

Which resorts are best for beginners?

Use the "Beginners" filter above. Resorts with plenty of gentle, easily reached slopes and ski schools suit first-timers best. Snow-sure, high-altitude resorts are a safer choice early or late in the season.

Do I need ETIAS for a ski holiday this winter?

No. ETIAS has not started and no start date has been confirmed. You will go through the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) at the border, which records your fingerprints and photo on your first trip.

Is my travel insurance enough for skiing?

Often not. Many standard policies exclude winter sports. Check that your policy covers skiing or snowboarding, and off-piste if you plan to go. A UK GHIC gives access to state healthcare in EU countries but does not cover mountain rescue or repatriation.

How we checked this guide

Season dates, altitudes and piste lengths come from each resort's official website or tourist office, checked on 9 October 2026. Where 2026/27 dates have not been announced, we show the expected dates based on last season and mark them "TBC". Opening depends on snow, so dates can change. Transfer times are approximate, and flight and train routes change between seasons, so check before you book. Passport rules come from GOV.UK foreign travel advice.
